You want to make sure that your koi pond is deep and large enough to contain the amount of koi that you plan on keeping in your pond.  This will help you to take care of them better and you will not lose as many fish.  Koi are expensive and you do not want them to die simply because you did not have a large enough pond.

Before you fill the pond with the fish, you need to treat the water with one of the many aquarium water conditioners.  This will take out all of the contaminants from the water and make it livable for the fish.  You should follow the directions on the packaging to make sure that you do not harm your fish before you put them in the pond.
